The Road Narrows on Both Sides Ahead sign (Diagram 516) is a triangular warning sign used where a single-lane road becomes narrower on both sides, creating a potential hazard for drivers. As vehicles have less room to pass, the sign gives motorists time to slow down and take greater care around the narrowing section.

It’s commonly used on narrow rural roads, single carriageways, sharp bends, and other sections where the available road width changes significantly. The warning is especially useful where larger vehicles may have limited room to manoeuvre or where oncoming traffic could make passing more difficult.
